Name Mix-Up Dampens Rain's Hollywood Debut

Rain,
Speed Racer
Actor and musician Rain arrives at the premiere of 'Speed Racer'
at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California on Saturday.
The movie follows the adventures of a young race car driver Speed (Emile Hirsch)
in his quest for glory in his thunderous Mach 5. /AFP
Singer and actor Rain had an embarrassing moment at the premier of his Hollywood debut film "Speed Racer" at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on Saturday. The 26-year-old Korean superstar was introduced as Taejo Togokhan, the name of his character in the movie, instead of his real name Jung Ji-hoon, or his better-known stage name.
The premier drew reporters from around the world, come to see the latest work by directors Andy and Larry Wachowski, the creators of the worldwide blockbuster "The Matrix." Several Hollywood luminaries also turned out, including Jodie Foster, Tim Robbins and Jon Voight.
The first Wachowski movie in five years, "Speed Racer" is based on a Japanese animation called "Mach GoGoGo" about aspiring young car racers. Anticipation is building among movie lovers eager to see how the innovative directors, known for the revolutionary visual style they pioneered with the "Matrix" series, will use the latest computer technology to tell the tale.
Rain's name mix-up wasn't limited to just the announcements -- he was also listed as "actor Taejo Togokhan" in the caption of a photograph of him with costar Susan Sarandon. The mistake would be like writing Sarandon's name as "Mom Racer."
The publicists managed to get the name of Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada, who also appears in the movie, printed correctly. Having spotted the error, the foreign press corrected the Korean actor's name.
Meanwhile, Rain is set to tour to Asia, the U.S. and Europe to promote the film, kicking off with a stop here at home where the movie is slated to open on May 8.

Lee Dong-wook stars in “Sweet Life” a new MBC TV drama currently in production
by I under
Lee Dong Wook
Actor Lee Dong-wook (age: 27) returns to the small screen after a 2-year hiatus.
He will star in “Sweet Life,” a special MBC weekend TV drama that is set to premiere on May 3, 2008 in the leading role. His co-star will be actress Oh Yeon-soo (age: 37). The show is a romance about how Joon-soo, the character that Lee Dong-wook will play, falls in love with a married woman whom he met by coincidence during a trip to Japan.
It would seem to be another TV drama about a scandalous affair but Lee Dong-wook offers a different take on the drama by emphasizing that “it’s not story about a typical romance or extramarital affair.” Yet, he didn’t go into any details to elaborate on the differences. “If I reveal any aspect of the plot, it would be a major spoiler so I don’t know what I can or cannot say about the show” he said. But he did drop a hint that the tagline in the “Sweet Life” synopsis that says, “There’s a devil inside me,” reveals something about his character.
While filming a scene on location at Hokkaido, Japan, Director Kim Ji-min told Lee Dong-wook to “try to bring out the devil inside of you.”’ Instead of describing the character that he plays, Lee said, “You might think that my character is the villain. But you’ll learn later on why he became like that. When I read the script, I knew that I had to play the role because of the uncharacteristic elements that you’ll see in him. Many actors and actresses crave to play characters that spiral downward into a pit of misery because it gives them a chance to display the raw emotions of a downtrodden figure.
With a wry smile, Lee said, “It’s easy to approach a role in a romantic comedy or a drama about a scandalous affair but this drama is totally different. That’s why I wanted the role so much. It’s more challenging than other roles but I believe that after I complete this project, I’ll become a better actor than before.’”
When asked about the playing the love interest of actress Oh Yeon-soo in “Sweet Life,” Lee said, “It was awkward at first to play opposite Oh Yeon-soo because not only is it my first time to co-star with her but she’s also 10 years older than me. I’m basically a shy guy. It wasn’t easy to act as her romantic partner. But since I spent 22 days shooting scenes with just her in Japan, I was able to get to know her well.”
Asked about any interesting incidents during his shoots, Lee Dong-wook marveled that, “The minute I landed in Japan, my days were filled with uncommon events that would never happen in Korea.” “It snowed 22 consecutive days in Japan. Don’t you think that’s crazy? I had a difficult time because of the snow and cold weather,” he recalled with a shiver. In one scene, he treads through the snow in a rage and that was one of his hard scenes to shoot. But Lee didn’t go any further as he stopped himself from unraveling the mystery surrounding his character. Known as the pretty boy of romantic comedies, he transforms into a villain in his new TV drama according to the vague hints that he dropped about his character. Viewers will have to wait until the TV drama premieres to find out more about his role.

Best & Worst Dresser at The 44th Baeksang Art Awards '08
by I under
Korean Fashion
BEST - Kim Hee Ae
WORST - Yoon Eun Hye
Good - Son Yeh Jin
BEST - Kim Hee Ae
The back is so boring.
WORST - Yoon Eun Hye
It's understandable that she ends up on the worst dresser list again but at least she's unique.I love the color of the dress less the ruffle part.
Good - Son Yeh Jin
Bad - Lee Ji Ah
BEST 3 : Han Ye Seul, Choi Yeo Jin & Hyun Young
What is she thinking??
WORST 3: Jung Ryeo Won, Sung Yuri, Lee Yeon Hee
I always found that koreans have weird tastes when judging best and worst dresses. The last list of three should be reversed in opinion.Lee Yeon Hee's red dress is fabulous, it's simple but yet striking. Also Sung Yuri's dress feels summery with the yellow flowery pattern. It doesn't look stiff like Son Yeh Jin's dress for example. I like dresses that flow.
What happened to cutie sexy pie Rain?
Before he entered this Hollywood craze. Here Rain looks still super hot with his messed up hair depressed boxer or clean bodyguard style in A love to Kill.
This is now he looks like after 9kg loss for his latest movie Ninja Assasin.
Number one geek of Korea
His hair is crying to be chopped off, please someone somebody tell him that.We know that geek style is in, but this is too much geekiness for my likehood. The one one that can pull off this style is Johnny Depp.

Oh Yeon-soo, Kiss scene in the snow with 10-year-younger Lee Dong-wook
by I under
Lee Dong Wook
Oh Yeon-soo plays Hye-jin in the new weekend special "Bittersweet Life", who leaves for Japan by herself after seeing the dishonesty of her husband. Joon-su (Lee Dong-wook), who saw her from the airport, has the same plans as her, and their feelings grow and continue to a kiss.
Filming in Japan started in February for a month in Japan's Hokkaido and Sapporo Otaru, where Hye-jin goes after her husband's betrayal and Joon-su after the death of a friend. Despite Oh Yeon-soo(37) and Lee Dong-wook(27)'s ten-year age difference, they acted like real lovers and created a romantic and passionate atmosphere.
Oh Yeon-soo also had a kiss scene with Oh Ji-ho, also ten years younger, four years ago in KBS "A Second Proposal". Oh Yeon-soo and Lee Dong-wook said, "It was so cold that we wanted the kiss scene, and all the other filming, to end quickly".
The mystery melodrama "Bittersweet Life" will air May 3, and aims to show the dangers of a 15-year married couple and the brutality of youth.

Four stingy questions about Rain's Hollywood entrance
by I under
Rain,
Speed Racer
Top star Rain is starring in Hollywood blockbuster "Speed Racer", which cost 300 billion won ($US 300 million), and will reveal his face to the whole world. He plays a handsome character with a big part, not distorted because he's Asian.
Rain, who rose as a singer and actor in Korea, came close to being a world star after a world tour, including a performance in America. With this movie, he will establish a foundation. With his sincerity and effort, he came out earlier than expected. He also has the lead role for "Ninja Assassin", the next work of the Wachowski brothers, the directors of "Speed Racer". The directors did not hesitate to put Rain in the leading role of their big project, ten years in the making.
At this point, it's hard not to be curious about the chemistry between Rain and "Speed Racer". The answers come from the world premiere on the 18th and an interview with Rain. Of course, most of the answers are not disappointing.
Does Rain speak English well?
When Rain, who was born, raised, and worked in Korea, said he would come out in a Hollywood movie, everyone was doubtful about his English skills. Would he be able to show his talent when he had to focus on accomplishing his English lines?
But after the premiere, there were many in the audience who applauded Rain's natural recitation of his lines. There weren't any long and difficult lines, but there was no indication that it was his first English movie.
Rain said that the secret for these results were 'honestly'. He said, "From the beginning, I truthfully admitted that I was learning English and to tell me if I pronounced something wrong. My fellow actors also corrected my usage, and monitored my scenes especially with care".
His way of studying English is to talk to himself. He revealed, "It's become a habit to sit at a coffee shop and ask questions and answer them by myself. My English is still at a conversation level, but by next year, I hope to speak comfortable even in a formal setting".
Taejo Togokhan? Isn't he Japanese?
Asian roles in Hollywood movies are usually Japanese or Chinese. This movie was a remake of the Japanese comic "Mahha GoGoGo" and there was speculation that Rain's haracter Taejo Togokhan was Japanese. It's not a big problem of what nationality he is, but there was the desire that it would be known as a Korean.
The movie approached his nationality vaguely, and took a step back from the problem. Togokhan's father seems Chinese, and his younger sister seems Japanese. The company name at the office is in Korean. Rain's opinion greatly influenced the Korean in the movie. Rain took care of the problem by saying "Taejo Togokhan is just Asian American".
Easy to adjust to Hollywood actors and system?
He wasn't absolutely alone, but there were a lot of things he had to do alone in that unfamiliar place. Rain said he was worried at first. "It seemed Hollywood top stars wouldn't be as kind to Asians".
But the results were opposite. Rain was amazed at the set, directors, and actors, but he was determined not to make it obvious. So he had no NGs or faults. The actors were nice and they got along well.
Rain revealed his ability to adapt. "Almost everything was filmed with a green screen. It was embarrassing to stare into space and recite lines with nothing there, but after the second time, I got used to it and it was fun".
He also got along with the actors. "There is a scene where I punch Emile Hirsch. I still remember people monitoring in front of the camera and telling me that I did really well. And Susan Sarandon, who I liked when I was young, complimented my acting and it seemed like a dream. Later, she took a signed CD, saying that she saw my performance on YouTube. She sent a letter congratulating my Hollywood debut, and I have it safe at home".
"I watched 'Lost', 'Prison Break', and 'Entourage" to study English, and it was nice to meet Matthew Fox, the main character of 'Lost'. He is handsome, and I tried hard to get close to them".
As the directors, Rain, who didn't have a single NG, seemed to be a logical choice for their next work. Rain wanted to treat them to Korean food, and invited them to Korean restaurant in Berlin for bulgogi and kimchi. The Wachoski brothers then asked, "You work very hard. There's something we've been preparing for ten years. Do you want to do it?"
Rain said, "Sure. Who's the main character?" And the directors answered, "It's you". And so, "Ninja Assassin", filming from next month, will allow Rain to do the action and sad acting that he wanted.
Is there a big emphasis?
Taejo Togokhan is an important character who controls the main character's situation. He is not simply a sweet friend or an evil character, but a role whose mystery grows towards the end of the movie. Rain acted out scenes when he was angry, nervous about a competition, and cheering innocently.
Initially, the emphasis was small, but it grew with Rain's efforts. How hard he must have worked for the directors to expand his role. But if you know Rain's sincerity, it is easy to understand. Afraid that he would be pushed around by the actors, he didn't sleep right, wore the racing uniform in 35 degree Celsius weather, not asking for water or rest, and showed that 'Koreans are always like this'.
It is a custom for blockbusters, but there may be a third "Speed Racer", and Rain may have the opportunity to reveal the mystery behind Taejo Togokhan. He said, "I'm curious about some scenes toward the end. There seems to be something after that, but they won't tell me".
If anyone has been into the online game "Kart Rider" (Open the link), the movie will seem exciting. You can see Rain holding a steering wheel in the midst of great computer graphics on May 8.
