Treasure hunting hits the small screen

"Indiana Jones," "National Treasure," "Tomb Raider" and "The Mummy" drew in crowds with their treasure-hunting plotlines, proving that action, suspense, money and a dash of comedy are a winning combination.

This time around, Korea's major broadcasting channel MBC decided to capitalize on that foolproof formula with their latest Monday and Tuesday night drama, "Night After Night." In this detective story, celebrities Kim Suna and Lee Dong-gun play an unlikely pair of treasure hunters.

Actress Kim Suna, who rose to fame in the MBC drama "My Lovely Sam-soon" (2005), brings her tomboy persona to the role of a tough Cultural Heritage Administration cop. Pretty boy Lee Dong-gun, 27, takes on the fitting role of a womanizing arts scholar. The two team up to solve the crime of the century, falling in love along the way.

At the press conference held last week, Kim hinted at the comedic squabbling to come, stating: "Lee Dong-gun and I spent about four to five hours filming in the hot springs."

"I didn't want to hit him," the 32-year old actress explained, grinning. "But I was so overheated, my hand just went out."

She was referring to a key scene in the upcoming drama, where Lee's character catches Kim's in the nude while she is taking a dip in the hot springs. The outraged Kim slaps Lee. In fact, she hits him so hard he ends up falling over backwards into the water.

Lee, who was sitting next to Kim during the press conference, winced at the memory of the painful incident. Set to play an antiquities expert, this heartthrob first won female audiences over in the hit SBS drama "Lovers in Paris" (2004). His good looks and suave personality got him supporting roles in several melodramas before he started to make headlines in romantic comedies like "My Boyfriend is Type B" (2005).

Now, he gets to play a well-versed and slightly devious partner to Kim's rough and no-nonsense cop.

But will this drama deliver? Screenwriter Yoon Eun-gyung peddled the storyline as an educational experience, stating, "Our drama will put the unfamiliar topic of cultural assets in layman's terms for the masses."

While that sounds like a noble cause, it may lack the punch needed to beat out heavy-hitter "Sikgaek." The epic SBS drama topped viewer ratings charts last Tuesday.

Sikgaek's solid plot and top-notch actors drew in audiences, and it will prove hard to lure them away with cultural assets, unless it involves high-flying action, suspense and razor-sharp humor.

Judging from the preview, however, the upcoming miniseries looks more like a slapdash comedy than a tension-building mystery.

What it might lack in excitement, however, it promises to make-up for with accuracy. Lee Hyun-ju, the international and public relations team representative for the National Museum of Korea, said that "Night After Night" is the first drama to film at the museum.

"They filmed in the exhibition hall, in the museum lobby and in the scientific preservation room with a preservation specialist," she said.

Lee added that the museum has never been featured in movies or dramas before.

According to Lee, the museum staff has been providing advice on cultural assets. She also tipped off those who want to catch Lee and Kim in action.

"They film at the museum on Mondays," she said.

The drama starts airing tonight on MBC at 9:55 p.m.

Despite Increasing Applications, Korea Accepts Few Refugees

Actor Shin Hyun-jun, World Refugee Day PR envoy

Some 11 million refugees worldwide roam beyond their countries' borders because of persecution at home. On the 8th World Refugee Day on Friday, the Justice Ministry revealed that 1,951 people have applied for refugee status in Korea since 1994 when the country began accepting applications to May this year.

But Korea granted refugee status to only 76 applicants, the lowest number among the 30 member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Refugees for the entire OECD number 2.5 million, over half of which are in the U.S. (840,000), Germany (610,000) and the UK (300,000). Korea lags behind Japan (1,840), Iceland (260) and even Slovakia (240).

Korea's poor record on refugees is due to a lack of interest at the government level. The United Nations installed the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in 1951 but Korea only joined the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees in Dec. 1992 and began accepting applicants two years later.

Only 96 applied until 2000 but applicant numbers have since soared to 717 last year alone, and there have been calls for special measures to protect refugees. The vast majority of applicants -- 96.6 percent -- come from Asia (1,133) or Africa (752), with the top three countries being Nepal (374), China (302) and Burma (192).

Refugee applicants receive a G-1 visa which must be renewed every three months. They are not allowed to work and are not covered by health insurance, and even those who are granted refugee status enjoy no employment or living support programs.

Applicants also say that Korea's deliberation period is particularly long; over 60 percent of the 1,951 applicants are still waiting. Deliberations alone once took eight years, the Joint Committee with Migrants in Korea says. Only eight government officials are charged with refugee affairs -- two in the Justice Ministry and six at Seoul Immigration. The ministry says the process takes so long because of a shortage of staff.

In Canada, the government operates a Resettlement Assistance Program, sort of a fund for refugees, and provides lodging, basic necessities, employment assistance and health checkups. In France, refugees who pay a quarter of their income can stay and eat at 28 state-run facilities for refugee families. They also receive support for basic living, childcare, larger families and elderly family members.

It's no exaggeration to say that Korea has no such support programs. A Justice Ministry official confirmed the lack of institutions and budgets for refugees and applicants. An official with the South Korean branch of Amnesty International blamed Korea's poor reputation on refugees to its view of refugees as a mere immigration affair, rather than seeing the issue from a human rights perspective.

But the Justice Ministry says that as more are granted refugee status following deliberations, Korea's acceptance level is not short of the global standard. Korea's recognition rate (15.5 percent) is lower than that of the U.S. (37.4 percent) and UK (17.1 percent), but higher than that of France (10.2 percent), Germany (6.8 percent) and Japan (6.2 percent).

Some applicants to Korea have been able to win refugee status through lawsuits even after being declined by the government. The Seoul Administrative Court said among the single case filed in 2004 and 51 through last year, a fifth had won. "It's difficult for refugees to prove the persecution they claim to have suffered at home," a court official said. "Courts tend to grant recognition based on consistent and concrete testimony and arguments that do not contradict facts relating to the country in question, even without hard proof."

Cha Gyu-geun of the Justice Ministry's National and Refugee Team said, "It's true -- budget support and interest are insufficient in Korea due to its short history with the issue, but efforts are being made to establish a world-class refugee protection system."

Interview] Moon Geun-yeong... after twenty, her harsh coming-of-age

The nation's younger sister, female student, rumors, and woman wearing men's clothes. Anyone can explain their lives in several words. If 21-year-old actress Moon Geun-yeong were to sum up her life, these four words will surface. Everyone who knows her agrees to these words and is curious about them. They also wanted to hear her true thoughts about these words. In the past, she was liked by young and old for her innocent image from "My Little Bride" and many commercials. But after her disappointing movie "Love Me Not", it was hard to see her in dramas or movies.

So three years of inactivity. Now, her first steps of her 20s will be as a 'woman dressed in men's clothes', as shocking as a 'high school student who married too early'. In the September SBS drama "Painter of the Wind", she is playing Shin Yun-bok, who is rumored to have gone in as a palace artist dressed as a man.

For Moon Geun-yeong, acting was a series of risks like these. As an actress, Moon Geun-yeong's life is not inferior to hers. As soon as she became a young woman after being the 'nation's younger sister', the thing that found her was evil rumors. Who can say Moon Geun-yeong only walked across the broad highway?

- Is the title of the 'nation's younger sister' overwhelming? If it is, how does it feel?
"The words 'younger sister' is pressure to the 'actress Moon Geun-yeong'. Because I can't always stay as a younger sister… Compared to that, the word 'nation's' is pressure to the 'person Moon Geun-yeong'. It's like telling me that I always have to be nice".

- Even by physical age, you are an adult now. Your coming-of-age was a little chaotic. Everyone interfered, everyone worried, and sometimes, everyone forced.
"If that's coming-of-age, then it's still going on. These days, I somewhat understand why people tell me to stop growing and stay as I am. If I think of myself as twenty-five, it's awkward for me too. (laugh)"

- You've also been surrounded by rumors too evil to mention.
"I heard it at the beginning of the year. The person that came to mind was my mom. I thought, 'When Mom heard this or will hear it, how disappointed she must be'".

- How did it feel to experience those rumors?
"Rumors with evidence will be a little more comforting. It'll give me something to say. When people who never even said, 'Moon Geun-yeong is bad' were talking nonsense about me, I felt it. 'It's an example of how feelings change. Now, I'm even being hated'".

- The public praises you one moment, then turns cold the next. Your feelings about that?
"There was a time when they became cold. Wasn't it at my freshman orientation, when I chose Korean literature as my major rather than film and television? I took tests and had interviews for registration… It's not like I got in unfairly, so it was unfortunate that they were saying those things about me".

- One of the words that describe Moon Geun-yeong is contribution to society.
"Truthfully, I feel like it's for my satisfaction. Is that too selfish? When I donate, I feel happy. When the people I've helped send me letters, when I receive that kind of feedback, I feel like I've done something really good, that I have to live better".

- Does that influence come from your mother who works at the library?
"My mom is the one who taught me to give. I've realized many important things from the friends I've helped. They're the friends who live in villages. These people who live hard lives saved money in their piggy banks to help others. They said, 'We want to help others just like Geun-yeong helped us'. I've realized through my experiences that if you share, you receive more, and it became a directing guide for my life".

- Your first role in your 20s is a cross-dressing woman. Is it too much, scary, or a soft landing to ease the shock?
"My thoughts were simple. The role was exciting and I wanted to try it. I know that there is a lot of talk about the role of a cross-dressing woman. It can be all right from the view of the public. Words like 'adult, woman' truly overwhelm me".

- If you succeed in this role, what title will you receive in addition to the 'nation's younger sister"?
"Is a title really necessary? I'll be bound again by the title…"

- They say it's hard to escape an image as an actor if you are loved because of it…
"It's a misunderstanding that I'm trying to change. When I look in the mirror, I think that my expressions or my looks are like a child's. I can't do anything but hope that time will be sketched on my face. The only difference is the pace, but everyone gets old. I want to enjoy this young appearance I have".

- The public doesn't want you to change but also criticizes you for not changing. You could be dissatisfied with that.
"It was like that once. I don't think I need to find the answer in the fans. From the public's view, aren't both right?"

"I want to love someone who shows me faith". When interviewing the teenage star, there were unspoken questions that were avoided. Most of them were about love. One thing that confirmed that Moon Geun-yeong was a young woman was when there were questions about things that were unspoken of before. Have you ever been to blind dates? Have you dated? What is your view on love? Twenty-one-year-old Moon Geun-yeong, who had been awkward because of her image, answered without hesitation.

- How does the student Moon Geun-yeong live? How about blind dates?
"They leave me out. Friends don't even ask me about it".

- Are there any students who show interest in you? Not things like asking for autographs.
"They only ask me for autographs. But I don't respond to those requests. I know there are a lot of complaints because of that. At school, Moon Geun-yeong is not a famous person".

- What is Moon Geun-yeong's view of love?
"There has to be trust between the two people. It's like that for friendships too. I want to love someone who shows me faith. And I want the other to feel the same faith from me…"

- As a third year, you have seniority. Do you buy drinks for your juniors?
"There are several juniors who I hang out with. We meet and eat, and sometimes drink".

- What is the meaning of your school life?
"For people who see famous people on television, fame can be a dreamlike world. A life where you are always watched might be uncomfortable, but for me, school is like that. Falling asleep, ditching class, although I haven't spent all night drinking, drinking in front of school, these things seem like a dream to me".

- Plans to study more after graduating?
"I don't want to be greedy for it. But if you can work hard, I think it's best to study as much as possible. I worry about studying Korean literature more or studying film and television. I think it comes from the fact that I haven't officially studied for my job".

Panda sets Korean B.O. records

Written by Han Sunhee

SEOUL - "Kung Fu Panda" set records as the fastest moving animated movie in Korean box office history. It topped the chart for the second consecutive week with 908,368 admissions over its second weekend and has taken a cumulative gross of $15.4 million. The pic passed 2 million ticket sales landmark Saturday, its tenth day of release. That is some four days quicker than "Shrek 2," which in 2004 went on to garner 3.3 million admissions.

Another green monster also showed impressive performances at No.2 in the Korean chart. "Incredible Hulk" opened on 529 screens and grossed $2.8 million from 455,588 admissions during the weekend. Helmer M. Night Shyamalan's mystery "The Happening" also debuted at No.3 with a $1.2 million cume from 200,576 admissions during the weekend.

Having opened at No.2 in its first frame, "Sex and the City" slipped to No.4 in its second weekend, taking its cume to $4.9 million to date. "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and "What Happens In Vegas..." maintained their No.4 and No.5 rankings, taking their cumes to $25.4 million and $4.2 million respectively.

Among local films, two recent releases with female protagonists managed to keep the chart from being totally occupied by Hollywood summer blockbusters. At No.7, "Black Heart," a romantic comedy about three mother and daughter pairs, took $260,000 from 40,760 admissions. "Girl Scout," a vehicle for Kim Sun-ah ("My Lovely Sam-Soon") ranked at No.9 taking its cume to $1.4 million from 219,090 admissions.

Why Was 'Speed Racer' a Box Office Flop?

recent edition of Variety magazine featured a column written by deputy on-line editor Anne Thompson on why the film 'Speed Racer' ended up being a box office flop. The film, which opened in more than 3,500 theaters nationwide in the United States on May 9, only raked in 42 million dollars, which is less than the 80 million dollars spent on the film's promotion.

The magazine pointed out that the the target audience was way too limited for the 200 million-dollar movie to succeed. It also pointed out that the collaboration between Joel Silver and the Wachowski brothers didn't really work for the film, which mainly targeted a young audience.

Although the filmmakers originally targeted the parent generation who grew up watching the cartoon series 'Speed Racer' during the 1960s and 1970s, the film appealed instead to children who had never even heard of the cartoon series. The film's 120-minute running time was deemed too long for the children audience, who found the dynamic speed of the storyline and complex computer graphics a little exhausting to watch after a while.

The magazine article concluded by saying that Warner Bros. had perhaps tried too hard to compete with sequel films such as Harry Potter, Superman and Batman.

Online rumors about celebs and military duty denied

Local Internet portal site My Daily reported Monday that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is promoting plans to offer hallyu stars like Rain alternatives to military service.

The site claimed that Culture Minister Yoo In-chon and some 18th National Assembly lawmakers are hoping to amend the laws.

The Ministry denies the report.

“It is true we submitted a form asking to reduce the military service period for hallyu stars, but nothing has been decided yet,” said Hwang Sung-woon of the Ministry.

J-Tune Entertainment, Rain’s agency, is also in the dark. “It isn’t an issue that we are involved in,” said Cho Dong-won, head of the agency.

Album sales to support starving North Korean kids

Actor Cha In-pyo and some 40 popular singers including In Soon-e and Park Sang-min will record a joint album, “Cry with Us,” to help raise money for North Korean children.

The shortage of food in North Korea is an on-going global issue and all proceeds from album sales will go to help relieve the crisis, according to Korea Entertainment Producer’s Association on Monday.

Meanwhile, Cha has been cast in Kim Tae-gyun’s “Crossing,” a film about North Korean defectors. It opens next Thursday.

Public enemy #1 swaggers back to cinema box office

'The action scenes might be less impressive, as I tried to emphasize character and drama more.'

Cheol-jung, the stubborn detective from “Public Enemy” (2002) is back. But this time, he is even more tenacious in hunting down vicious villains.

“Public Enemy Returns,” the sequel to Public Enemy by director Kang Woo-suk gets released tomorrow. Kang is also well known for “Silmido” (2003), a blockbuster based on a botched assassination attempt on the late North Korean leader Kim Il Sung in the 1970s.

He feels his job isn’t secure enough and he wants to buy a decent house for his daughter and mother. But quitting his job isn’t easy. Just in time, his squad uncovers a murder that involves the team’s longtime enemy Won-sul (Jeong Jae-young), the chairman of the Geo-seong group.

Even though Won-sul appears to be benevolent toward his family, he is in fact a malicious thug who recruits high school students as wanna-be gangsters.“Some note the dangers in involving minors as gangsters in the story,” the director said.

But after Kang watched a current affairs program on television that dealt with professional gangs that enlist 17-year-olds, Kang couldn’t resist making the film. He wanted his film to depict the reality of criminal organizations that trained minors to commit violent crimes.

“The film is much more than a simple gangster movie,” he said, noting that he was very careful not to depict too much violence in the film. Instead, Kang suggests that the film could be called a “drama in action.” “The action scenes might be less impressive [than his previous films]. I tried to emphasize characters and drama more this time,” he said.

To create more dramatic tension, Kang worked characters from the original 2002 film into the script. Squad leader Eom (Kang Sin-il) and detective Kim (Kim Jung-hak) reappear. “Familiar characters create a more emotional connection between the viewers and the film,” Kang said.

The most familiar, of course, is Seol, back on the screen as Cheol-jung six years after his first outing in Public Enemy. But filming was not always plain sailing. “He [Seol] said he wanted to return as Cheol-jung but as the day of filming approached, he asked if we could postpone the schedule,” Kang said.

The director had written Cheol-jung as a bit of an old fogey. But there’s a reason. “It’s been 20 years since I debuted as director and I haven’t changed much,” Kang said. But in the first series, Cheol-jung was a young, hot-tempered detective. Wouldn’t he have changed after five or six years? “I presume he would be exhausted from the grim realities of life,” Kang said. “It would be childish if Cheol-jung was still such a firebrand after so much time had passed.”

Kang was worried that the latest installment of the Cheol-jung franchise would be seen simply as a remake of the 2002 movie. “I was most fearful that the film would be like the first one,” he said. He had to be careful, in any case. His last movie, “Hanbando” (2006), failed at the box office. “I was up a blind alley,” Kang said. “I thought to myself this was the end. I wanted to take a risk on what I am most familiar with and can do best.”

The return of Public Enemy marks the 20th anniversary since Kang’s debut with “Sweet Brides,” a romantic comedy film starring actor Choi Jae-sung. Among his films, Kang cherishes the comedy thriller “Two Cops” (1993) and Public Enemy the most.

Though it was a commercial hit, Kang said he wants to remake Silmido. “The film doesn’t have any humor,” he said. “If I had a chance to remake the film, I would add more funny bits. If there were more gags in the latter part of the film, the ending would be more emotional.”

That’s why humor is so strong in from the start of Public Enemy Returns, the director says.

'Samsooni' Is Back

Drama Hightens Awareness on Cultural Assets

By Han Sang-hee
Staff Reporter

Poster for "Night After Night,'' which stars Lee Dong-gun, left, and Kim Sun-a

When National Treasure No.1 Namdaemun burned down in a fire in February this year, Koreans emotionally fell down with it. Although the government vowed that it will restore the beloved treasure, it was evident that cultural assets needed more attention. Followed by the disastrous reminder and the on-going demand for attention to these treasures, MBC is airing its new drama "Night After Night'' next week.

"Night After Night'' is the first drama to tell the stories of national treasures and the people who dedicate their time and effort to protect and preserve them. Written by Yun Eun-kyeung, the writer from KBS' "Winter Sonata (2002),'' the 16-episode drama is expected to raise awareness of the vulnerable treasures and cultural assets dotted around the nation.

"The drama is about the love and work of young and passionate characters. Many worried that the story may unfold a bit complicatedly because we touched on the issue of the preservation of national treasures,'' Son Hyeong-suk, the producer said at a press conference held at the National Museum of Korea.

Actress Kim Sun-a will star as the patriotic national treasure security agent Huh Cho-hee, while actor Lee Dong-gun will play the smart but two-faced treasure restoration expert Kim Bum-sang. The two actors will not only show the viewers their trademark charms and charisma, but also the process of restoring and preserving important treasures including books, vases and scrolls.

"Huh has a secret about her father ― He was the reason she became a treasure-keeper. The story will unfold as the heartbroken Huh meets Kim and starts to open her heart,'' Kim said.

"As I saw the Namdaemun Gate falling on the news, it broke my heart. I regretted that we were just so ignorant. It was a chance for not only me, but for the whole public to realize the importance of our treasures. The drama will hopefully help people realize what we have to do in the future,'' she added.

It is her first television drama in three years after her success in "My Lovely Sam-soon" (2005). The image of a comical woman stayed with her, and when asked if she was worried of her Sam-soon image, she laughed. "I don't expect the viewers to rub off that image easily. But I hope they will watch the new drama and discover and focus on the new character Cho-hee,'' she said.

Lee, from the SBS drama "Lovers of Paris'' (2004), also admitted that he has been ignorant. "I play an expert in the drama, so I studied a lot. I learned about Korean treasures, their features and what they mean to our culture. I'm sure everybody in the crew has learned a lot and I hope the viewers will too,'' he said.

"We just hope the drama will help people realize what the most important treasure is in their own lives. It may be a cultural asset, or even a family member. Look around, and there are many treasure that we need to take care of,'' Son said.

"Night After Night'' will start airing at 9:55 p.m. June 23 on MBC.
