'Nicholas Tse & Cecilia Cheung To Divorce'
14 February 2008
Alex Au
Nicholas Tse (謝霆鋒) and Cecilia Cheung (張拍芝) have separated as a result of the sex photos scandal that has rocked Hong Kong showbiz, Ming Pao, a Hong Kong newspaper, reported today, citing rumours.
Patrick Tse (謝賢), father of Nicholas, refused to comment.
Reporters for the newspaper telephoned Deborah Li (狄波拉), Nicholas' mother, but could only get through to voicemail.
The newspaper quoted sources from the legal profession who said that, even though the couple married in the Philippines, the union and any divorce can be dealt with by Hong Kong jurisdiction because at least one of the couple is a Hong Kong citizen. The legal sources told the newspaper that after one year of separation the couple can file for divorce without citing any particular reason.
The couple married in September 2006. Last year, in an interview with Squat, batgwa.com's supplement pages, Nicholas said his marriage to Cecilia was "for life".
Cecilia was implicated by the sex photos scandal when images purportedly of her nude and engaged in sex acts with Edison Chen (陳冠希) started surfacing on the internet over two weeks ago. The photos were allegedly stolen from Edison's computer when it went in for repair.
Hong Kong newspapers have rumoured for days that Nicholas was angry and upset because some of the sex photos seem to have been taken just before the couple got married.
The house the couple shared was vacated two weeks ago and the couple have not been seen in public since the sex photos started leaking.

Stars aligning for the Year of the Rat
With the first day of the Lunar New Year tomorrow, rats, the first among the 12 animals in the zodiac, symbolize diligence, fecundity and cleverness. Kim Hoon, a top-rated writer, was born in the rat year, and nobody questions his diligence.
Forget dirty, germ-spreading rodents because the zodiac only focuses on the positive traits of each animal. There are plenty of role models for those who identify themselves with the rodent. Mickey Mouse is a fine example. Or Remy of "Ratatouille," a young rat who cooks delicious meals at a French restaurant.
Since there are only 12 animals, it is hardly surprising that Korea has many celebrities who were born in the Year of the Rat. But what's unusual is that many of today's leading stars, now in their mid-30s, were born in 1972, another rat year.
Seo Tai-ji is a case in point. Seo's 15th anniversary album, released in November last year, instantly sold out, and he is getting ready to release his eigth regular album in March this year. His comeback is deliberately planned for the rat year. He posted a message on his official homepage, saying "I'll take charge in 2008, and the eighth album fits nicely with the year 2008. Moreover, it's the Year of the Rat."
Actor Bae Yong-joon, who achieved fame through "Winter Sonata," also belongs to the rodent-year star group. In 2007, Bae showcased his acting talent by playing King Gwanggaeto of the Goguryeo Kingdom in the period TV drama "Taewangsashingi (The Four Guardian Gods of the King)." In April this year, the hit series will be aired on NHK TV in Japan, almost as if celebrating Bae's zodiac sign.
Singer and producer Park Jin-young produced the blockbuster debut album of the five-girl group Wonder Girls. While the Wonder Girls wowed the nation with their hit song "Tell Me" last year, Park also successfully released his own album in Korea.
Park's 2008 goal is more ambitious. As a music producer, he is aiming to help singers in his company make a debut in the U.S. market.
Jang Dong-gun, who is widely considered Korea's leading heartthrob, is also looking beyond the local market. He is currently shooting a Hollywood flick titled "Laundry Warrior" in New Zealand.
Other stars born in 1972 include Yu Jae-suk, a popular TV host and comedian, Kim Sang-kyung, who plays the leading role in the KBS historical TV series "Great King Sejong," and Kim Myung-min, who made an impression with his role in the MBC hit series "White Tower."
Leading comedians Yoon Jeong-su, Seo Kyeong-seok and Lee Yoon-seok were also born in 1972.
Among female celebrities born in 1972, Shim Eun-ha stands out. She is still popular despite retiring several years ago. Ko So-young, Kim Won-hee, Jang Seo-hee, Yum Jung-ah and Jeong E-hyeon are also leading players in the film, TV and literary markets.
The rats in their 30s are said to have benefited from the rich cultural foundations of the 1990s when Korean pop culture witnessed a strong growth, sowing the seeds for the Korean Wave boom throughout Asia in the following years.
Meanwhile, a host of younger actors born in 1984, another Year of the Rat, are riding the alignment of the stars this year. Yoon Eun-hye, famous for her role in "Gung" and "Coffee Prince Shop No. 1," is expanding her fame beyond Korea, while other 1984 rat-year female stars include Han Ji-hye, Ku Hye-seon, Nam Sang-me, Shin Min-ah and Park Han-beol.

Top Asianovelas since the year 2002

Meteor Garden's phenomenal success paved the way for more Asianovelas here in the Philippines. The popular Taiwanese group F4, together with Barbie Shu, had the Spanish soap operas taking a back seat. [Photo by: images from Hancinema and wikipedia]
Asianovelas have been popular with the Filipino audience ever since Taiwan's Meteor Garden hit the airwaves back in 2002. Since then, a steady stream of shows from Taiwan, Korea, and Japan soon found its way to Philippine shores and started a new craze in local programming, quickly adding a few more slots in the telenovela fan's list of favorites. In just a few years, the Asianovela invasion successfully built a country-wide fan base.
"Asianovelas" are drama shows produced in Asian countries and, of course, the Philippines. The term is a spin-off from "Telenovela," which refers to the Spanish soap operas, like Marimar, that first entered the country.
How do Asianovelas differ from the Telenovelas that we have grown to love?
Asianovelas offer unique, straight-to-the-point, engaging storylines. We Filipinos can comfortably relate with Asianovelas for their traditional ways of story telling. Real-life situations are interpreted and delivered so gracefully, all we have to do is sit back and enjoy the story's unfolding.
The Asian stars with their chinky eyes and smooth complexion look foreign yet feel familiar. After all, especially in urban areas, we often see or interact with Chinese, Korean, and Japanese nationals. The actresses' pulchritude and the hunky yet lean frame of the handsome leading men in Asianovelas exude freshness. No sweaty-looking actors and over-sexy actresses, no long complicated plots.
PEP's Top List highlights the Asianovelas that got us hooked from the first to the final episode. Ranking is based on the ratings and the word-of-mouth fame that a particular series earned both locally and abroad.
If you disagree with the list or if you have more shows to suggest, feel free to share here.
On to the Top Ten Asianovelas!
Meteor Garden.
Just say "F4" and we all know which Asianovela gets the Number One spot on this list. The F4 band caught our attention with their music and pretty-boy looks. Bring in the beautiful, equally talented actress Barbie Shu and you find yourself in Meteor Garden. First aired in the Philippines by ABS-CBN, the show's first few episodes caught like wildfire, forging its status as one of the most watched TV programs.
Meteor Garden, which sounds like a sci-fi project but is far from it, was first released in 2001 in Taiwan. It was based on a popular Japanese manga (comics) titled "Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flowers)."
Taiwanese producer Chai Zhi Ping, who was really interested in that manga, decided resolutely to make a TV-series version. But first, she had to find the right group of boys who would play as members of F4. Jerry Yan, Vaness Wu, Vic Zhou, and Ken Chu were chosen to play the characters and soon launched the drama that would catapult them to stardom. The success of the drama made the F4 one of the most famous music groups in 2001. They made the album Meteor Rain even before they had finished the drama.
Meteor Garden is the story of a poor but tough girl San Chai (Barbie Hsu) who studies at the Ing Te University, a university for rich people founded and funded by the F4's family. San Chai and the F4 boys cross paths and they embark on a journey of self-discovery.
Jewel in the Palace.
Dae Jang Geum, or Jewel in the Palace, takes the Number Two spot.
This show is a 2003 TV series produced by South Korean TV channel MBC. Jewel in the Palace was shown locally in November 2005 under GMA-7 and was hailed as the highest rating Koreanovela in primetime during that period. Because of its popularity, the show was rerun and again, garnered high ratings. Faith Cuneta sang the Tagalog version, "Pangarap na Bituin," of the show's theme song.
Based loosely on the historical figure depicted in the annals of Joseon Dynasty, the show focuses on Jang-geum (played by Lee Young Ae), the first female royal physician of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. The main theme is her perseverance, as well as the portrayal of traditional Korean culture, including Korean royal court cuisine and medicine.
Lovers in Paris.
This was another primetime Korean telenovela aired in the summer of 2004 under SBS studio. Lovers in Paris was the first of three romantic dramas set in Europe. The second was Lovers in Prague, and the third was simply titled Lovers.
ABS-CBN got the rights to air Lovers in Paris in 2005. Starting with a rating of 27.1% on its first airing, people thought that the show wouldn't do well, until it exploded with a rating of 36% a week later. It was an instant hit among drama fans, a top-rater in its timeslot. Its highest rating ever recorded was 39.7%. ABS-CBN aired the series in its international TFC last year, making it the first non-Philippine show in its roster.
Lovers in Paris is about Han Ki-joo, the president and son of the CEO of GD Motors. He's been living in Paris for two years after his failed marriage. A smart and charismatic man, he has been preparing to take over the company as chairman. That is, until he meets Kang Tae-young, the daughter of a film director. She works as a housekeeper for Han Ki-joo to eke out a living. Her optimistic and happy-go-lucky attitude endears her to people around her. A twist of events and series of confrontations bring Han Ki-joo and Kang Tae-young closer together.
Stairway to Heaven.
This Korean drama from SBS was shown between late 2003 and early 2004.
The first week of Stairway to Heaven got relatively low ratings (about 20%) on GMA-7 mainly because another Korean soap, Lovers in Paris, was being aired on ABS-CBN. Viewership increased when Lovers in Paris ended its run; Stairway garnered over 40% in ratings.
In 2006, GMA-7 aired Stairway to Heaven again, but this time, in the morning. It was replayed in Q, the sister channel of GMA-7 in the evening.
The story is about best friends Song Joo and and Jung Suh. Their friendship in childhood slowly blossoms into love. But fate sends Song to the U.S. After three years, he returns to the waiting arms of Jung, but her love sparks the jealous rage of another woman who makes life hell for Jung.
Full House.
This drama-comedy explores the situation of two people getting married only on paper. A hilarious turn of events plagues Han Ji-Eun when she discovers that her friends tricked her into selling her home to a budding actor named Lee Young-Jae.
When confronted by Han, Lee agrees give Han's home back only if she agrees to work as a maid for him. Out of misunderstanding and in an attempt to make Lee's girlfriend jealous, he proposes to Han with a contract of marriage good for only six months. As time goes by, the two bickering housemates slowly fall in love... and the rest is history.
Full House made its debut on Philippine shores under GMA-7 back in 2005. It moved on to be the highest rated Koreanovela with a whopping 52.0% in the ratings, making it a household name among primetime fans.
Princess Hours.
Princess Hours, also known as Palace Love, is another comedy-drama from Korea. Under Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation, it became the most popular show of 2006 in Korea, second only to Jumong. According to TNS Media Research, Princess Hours was the tenth most popular drama of 2006. And so, a second season was produced but controversy within the show led to its cancelation.
Princess Hours premiered in the Philippines through ABS-CBN in December 2006. The network changed the names of the show's characters to make it more attuned to Filipino audiences.
Its theme song, "Pag-ibig Nga Kaya" was sung by former lovebirds Christian Bautista and Rachelle Ann Go. The show's finale was aired for two days last April 2007 with a special episode called Princess Hours: The Royal Special.
Set in an imaginary Korea ruled by a royal family, Princess Hours follows the lives of its Crown Prince and his new bride.
Endless Love: Autumn in My Heart.
Probably the most heart-wrenching Korean drama, Endless Love: Autumn in My Heart is the first installment of a four-part series revolving around the four seasons of the year. It was produced by the TV network KBS in Korea (2000). The Philippine airing rights went to GMA-7 back in late 2003. The drama was so popular among Pinoy fans that GMA-7 aired it two more times in 2004. Endless Love is considered to have started the Koreanovela phenomenon in the Philippines.
The story is about two teenagers, Johnny and Jenny, who are siblings-that is, until they find out after an accident that they are not blood-related. Jenny then gets into an argument with her foster mother, prompting her to leave home and begin the search for her real parents. Johnny and his parents had already left for the U.S. after the mishap.
For Jenny, it is tragedy after tragedy when she learns that her biological father is dead and that her mother and brother live in absolute poverty. Jenny makes ends meet by working as a telephone receptionist. An unlikely reunion takes place when Johnny returns from the U.S. after ten years. Thus follows a series of tearful events that fans can happily cry about.
Endless Love: Winter Sonata.
Winter Sonata (2002) is the second installment in the Endless Love series, but it focuses on a completely different story. Like its predecessor, Winter Sonata follows the tragic path of Jung Yujin and Joong Sang, who meet under fateful circumstances.
GMA-7 again got the rights to air this second Endless Love and, once again, attracted drama fans by its signature style of tearing up eye ducts with its engaging storyline and dramatic climax.
Kim Sam Soon.
Kim Sam Soon, produced by MBC TV in 2005 is probably the biggest thing that ever happened to the Koreanovela-its finale garnering over 50.5% in Korean households. The success of this show stemmed from the fact that it focused on the life of a chubby, single, middle-aged woman. The stereotype portrayed by actress Kim Seon-Ah won the support of nearly every middle-aged woman in Korea. Kim was said to have gained 15 pounds for the role, turning her into the "Bridget Jones of Korea."
The show depicts the life of a middle-aged woman named Kim, the daughter of a rice-mill owner. Her passion for baking lands her a job in a big French restaurant where she encounters a rude boss named Mr. Hyun. Though exact opposites, they gradually fall in love.
Jumong.
Jumong is another drama gem from TV MBC. The show premiered in Korea in May 2006 and its pilot episode immediately grabbed the 3rd spot in the rankings. It's a historical drama about Jumong Taewang, who lives in the old Korean empire of Gojoseon. Gojoseon has fallen to the Han Empire of China and it's up to Jumong to drive back the invaders. Because few historical records are found on the life of Jumong, the producers approached the story artistically. Much of the myth surrounding the main character had to be replaced with more realistic scenes, such as that concerning his birth.
The show commanded the ratings with its highest ever at 52.7% in Seoul. Nationwide ratings clocked in at 51.9%.
Jumong invaded the Philippines at the start of 2007. It became an instant hit because of its historical significance and awesome battle sequences. However, these qualities weren't enough to take Jumong to the top of the ratings game. It averaged only at a steady 20% to 25.3%, a fifth to sixth placer in the top ten primetime programs (AGB Nielsen).
End Notes.
Asianovelas will always have a place in Philippine TV because of their unique storytelling appeal. These dramas remain faithful to the story from start to finish, without ever dragging. They explore all kinds of emotion, never exaggerating and often portraying tradition and values that reflect our own.
Asianovelas truly leave us always surprised with their quick turnover. Take The Coffee Prince and Spring Waltz, for example. These two new shows came in as a fresh start after the Jumong craze.
It's unlikely that people will tire of Asianovelas anytime soon. Our local telenovela writers might learn something out of all the creativity that Asianovelas deliver.

Fourth on the ranking poll is Gong Yoo. This past year (2007) Gong Yoo shot to the top of the popularity poll with his role in the drama "The First Shop of Coffee Prince" along with Yoon Eun Hye. He enlisted on January 14th, but his fanbase remained intact . Hopefully, two years from now when Gong Yoo returning to his adoring public, there will be many more great dramas to come.
Last but not least among the top five favorite stars is the youthful Jang Geun Suk . In his debuting role as the first love of Hwang Jin-i in the television drama "Hwang Jin-i", Jang Geun Suk has made a lasting impression on the Vietnamese audience with his youthful good looks. In 2008, Jang Geun Suk returns to the television screen as the aloof Prince Chang Whee in Hong Gil Dong drama. This drama has helped Geun Suk gathered more and more Vietnamese fans as the series continues. The drama Hong Gil Dong at Krfilm.net is approaching the historic downloading mark. Hopefully, Jang Geun Suk will continues to win over the hearts of many more fans in the near future.
Those are the results of the poll for the "Princes", what about the "Princesses" ? After her memorable role in Goong that created a heat wave in Vietnam , Yoon Eun Hye became an Idol of the Vietnamese youths. The year 2007 witnessed a new maturity in Yoon Eun Hye's acting abilities via her role as as a girl disguised as a guy in order to get a job in the drama "The First Shop of Coffee Prince". This drama has earned her the Best Actress Award in the MBC Award 2007, as well as creating waves of excitement in the Vietnamese viewership community prior to the official showing in Viet Nam. The fact that she is on top of the list of actresses that Vietnamese fans would love to celebrate Lunar New Year with is not so surprising.
Second in ranking is the beautiful Song Hye Kyo. Despite the fact that her period-traditional movie version of Hwang Jin-i was not favorably reviewed, but the after affects of the Full House drama still very much presence in the hearts of many Vietnamese fans who would dearly want to celebrate the Lunar New Year with her.
Three years have past since Kim Tae Hee's departure from the television screen, but that did not diminish her popularity in Viet Nam. Her continuous appearances on magazines and commercials have earned her the title of CF Queen 2007. Despite its substantial financial investment, the movie "Quarrel" was not as successful as anticipated, so her fans are hoping that Kim Tae Hee will returns to the television screen in 2008. Tae Hee is ranking third in the
Krfilm.net's poll .
The fourth place belongs to a brand new name - Lee Ji Ah. This small sensation have stirred up many Vietnamese fans in the last 3 months of the year 2007. With her debuting role as Sujini in the substantially expensive drama Legends, the unknown Lee Ji Ah became an instant Celebrity overnight. The year 2007 is a highly successful year for Lee Ji Ah with 3 awards at the MBC Award 2007: Best New Actress Award, The Popularity Award, and The Best Couple Award. Vietnamese fans are looking forward to more dramas with Lee Ji Ah in 2008. Would she be able to overcome the highly popular shadow of Sunjini?
Trailing behind Lee Ji Ah is Sung Yu Ri. She is not well received in stereo-type roles as rich, fragile beauties in many of her previous dramas. But this year, 2008, Sung Yu Ri has forced many of her critics to change their views with her role of Huh Yi Nok in the period-traditional comedy series Hong Gil Dong. Currently, Yu Ri's role as Yi Nok is dearly loved by many of the Vietnamese fans.

As for Mainland China, based on the results of the poll by Sina (Sina.com), the ranking list is different somewhat as compared to the Vietnamese fans' ranking. The Korean Stars that Mainland Chinese fans would like to celebrate Lunar New Year with splitted evenly among Acting and Music category.
Leading the list is The Prince of Tears "Kwon Sang Woo". Re-appearing after two years in enlistment, Kwon Sang Woo has proven once again that his name is representational of the Korean Hallyu. The drama "Bad Love" in which he teamed up with Lee Yo Won, despite the fact that is not favorably received in Korea, but Mainland Chinese fans on the otherhand really like this drama. In Mainland China, Kwon Sang Woo is still ranked as number one Star with
22.43% of the overall votes.
Great singers, fantastic dancers and goodlooking are the five young men in the most successful boy band of Korea: Dong Bang Shin Ki. This Lunar New Year, if given the opportunity to celebrate it with the stars of their choice, 17.28% of Mainland Chinese fans have casted their votes for DBSK, which placed them in the second ranking on this poll. Last year, DBSK concentrated their efforts in Japan and succeeded in numerous goals. We wish DBSK many more success in the new year.
Similar to VietNam, the fact that Song Hye Kyo's name always presence on any given polls, let us know the extend of her popularity. In 2007, Song Hye Kyo only has one movie Hwang Jin-i and some commercials, but her fans are always supportive of her efforts so the third position on the poll is well-deserved.
The 13 young men of the boy band Super Junior (SJ or SuJu) have always been the "Dream Lovers" of all female fans in Asia . Mainland Chinese fans are not the exception to that rule either. Last year, Suju pushed forth their activities in Asia with the Asian Tour and focused on Mainland China as their MUST stop. Fans selected Suju at the fourth ranking with 16.87% of overall votes.
If you were to ask which Korean Female Singer has the most number of fans in Mainland China right now, then the answer is not BoA, or Hyori, but rather it is Chae Yeon. Chae Yeon has an amazing fanbase in Mainland China and that number surpassed the 100,000 mark. In the near future, Chae Yeon will release an album in Chinese per popular demands from her fans. Tentatively planned for 2008, Chae Yeon will concentrates her efforts in establishing her career in Mainland China. Chae Yeon ranked fifth (5th) place among all the Korean Stars that Mainland Chinese fans would like to celebrate Lunar New Year with.
Ranked sixth (6th) on the poll is the Shinhwa band of 6 young men. Shinhwa is a very popular boy band with a strong fanbase in Mainland China. The fact that the individual members had their own solo releases did not affect Shinhwa's performance as a group. But in 2008, the young men in this band will enlisted, so it will be two more years before we could once again see Shinhwa on the stage. Shinhwa is currently trying to wrap up all the loose ends prior to the group's enlistments.
Singer Jeon Hye Bin is 7th on the poll with 8.8% of the overall votes.
Next on the poll, ranked 8th on the favorite Stars' list is the gorgeous Actor Lee Jun Ki. Lee Jun Ki is a name that got the most coverage by Mainland China's mass media in the past few months. He went to Mainland China several times to promotes his drama and to set the wheels in motion for some of his plans in the future. With his success in the drama "Time Between Dog and Wolf", it further substantiated his popularity in the Mainland Chinese fanbase. Let's wait and see his portrayal of the humane bandit Iljimae. The drama "Iljimae", an SBS television's series is scheduled to air in April of 2008.
Ranking as ninth (9th) on the poll is the Actor/Singer Kim Jung Hoon. Currently, he is actively working in Mainland China, as well as appearing in the television Idol Drama "Love Strategies" with Vivian Hsu.
And last but not least, the beautiful Lee Da Hae. With her success in the drama "My Girl", Lee Da Hae became one of the most popular 8x actresses in Mainland China. In 2008, Lee Da Hae returns to the television screen as a young widow in the drama "Robbers". This drama does not have high rating in Korea, but in Mainland China it is one of the hottest dramas, with the highest number of viewerships. Lee Da Hae was also selected as the most loveable Mom on the screen. The number 10th on the popularity poll is perfect for her.
Top 10 Korean Stars that Chinese fans would love to celebrate Lunar New Year with:
1. Kwon Sang Woo
2. Dong Bang Shin Ki
3. Song Hye Kyo
4. Super Junior
5. Chae Yeon
6. Shinhwa
7. Jeon Hye Bin
8. Lee Jun Ki

Nude pictures copied from HK star's computer
HONG KONG (Reuters) - Photos purportedly showing a Hong Kong actor partially nude with several starlets were copied from his computer when it was serviced last year and later distributed over the Internet, police said on Monday.
The photographs, seemingly of actor and singer Edison Chen in bed with singer Gillian Chung, along with suggestive images of actress Cecilia Cheung, were recently posted online, sparking a media frenzy in the celebrity-mad former British colony.
While Chung's company, Emperor Entertainment Group, initially said the photograph of the normally squeaky-clean star was a digital fake, Hong Kong police said some 1,300 private shots of celebrities had been stolen from a faulty personal computer belonging to an individual who took it to a computer shop for servicing.
"A person had taken his computer to be fixed, but during the maintenance period, someone used dishonest means to take some information from the computer and distributed this information indiscriminately to others," assistant police commissioner Wong Fook-chuen told reporters.
While the police gave no specific names, Hong Kong's Ming Pao newspaper reported the photographs belonged to Edison Chen, 27.
"A person in the shop found hidden inside (Chen's) computer, confidential nude pictures of naked female stars, which were then secretly copied," Ming Pao reported, quoting an anonymous source.
The computer shop was subsequently raided by police officers in a widening investigation across the territory, which has led to eight arrests for infringing obscene material laws, and the seizure of over 1,000 explicit images including six women, four of whom were public figures, the police said.
In a statement on his blog (www.clotinc.com/blogs/public/edc) over the weekend, Chen criticised some of the recent media coverage and widespread publishing of the images.
"I would like for u (sic) to respect the situation that everyone is in and report the truth to the fullest."
He didn't clarify whether the images had been faked or stolen, but his manager said Chen would co-operate with the police investigation.
Hong Kong's police commissioner, Tang King-shing, said the case was being treated seriously and warned the possession and distribution of such images might be illegal.
But Internet users and activists have since challenged this position, saying the police were being overly harsh.

I'm lucky fake body looks good
Jay Chou on his face superimposed on someone else's nude torso:
By Chang May Choon
February 05, 2008
HE once found his face superimposed on the picture of a nude body, but Taiwanese R&B icon Jay Chou didn't seem to mind.
-- Picture illustration
'Luckily, he has a good figure,' he told The New Paper with a laugh.
What's not funny to him, however, is the ongoing sex saga plaguing Hong Kong heart-throb Edison Chen.
In town yesterday to promote his new movie Kung Fu Dunk, Jay, 29, expressed sympathy for Edison, his co-star in the 2005 hit film Initial D.
A week ago, intimate photos of what allegedly appears to be Edison with singer-actress Gillian Chung and ex-girlfriend Bobo Chan were circulated online.
Hong Kong reports said the leak happened when Edison got a friend to send his laptop for repairs some time ago.
Raunchy pictures of what appears to be Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung and Joey Yung also surfaced, and the media speculated there would be more victims in the form of Edison's ex-flings, like Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai.
When asked to comment, Jay, who was once romantically linked to Jolin, said: '(Such an incident) is hurtful for any artiste, especially female ones.
'It's not fair to the artiste that the photos got out. Everyone's shocked by the photos and everyone's discussing them, but I hope no more photos will surface.
'Let this come to an end already.'
What if a similar incident was to befall Jay, who is himself a budding director with the romantic flick Secret to his name?
Well, it couldn't, he seemed to say.
Jay claimed he does not like to take self-portraits, and it is his female assistant who took the few photos stored in his handphone.
She likes to borrow it because it has a better camera function, he said.
To this, the woman in question giggled in one corner of the room.
What's more, Jay claimed he never sends his phone for repairs.
'(If it's spoilt), I'll just change to a new one.'
After all, there are probably dozens of advertisers queuing up to get his endorsement.
His pop-music influence is legendary, and movies that boast his name have all turned out to be box-office hits.
The latest is Taiwanese veteran director Kevin Chu's Kung Fu Dunk, which stars Jay as a gongfu disciple who gets recruited by a businessman (Eric Tsang) to play varsity basketball and slam-dunks his way to fame.
SUFFERS IN SILENCE
Baron Chen and Chen Bo-lin co-star as his suave teammates while Charlene Choi plays the team's manager.
Director Kevin, who is banking on Jay's appeal to draw the crowds when the film opens on 7 Feb, praised his lead actor.
He said at the media conference held at Hotel InterContinental yesterday that Jay went beyond expectations.
Kevin also spoke of how Jay suffered in silence despite sustaining injuries while filming the slam-dunk stunts that required him to be suspended by wires in midair.
He said Jay's body hit the backboard so many times during the 150 retakes that he ended up with 16 bruises.
But the actor only mentioned it the next day as he did not want the director to feel sorry for him and cut short the filming.
Kevin said: 'This will be a basketball classic. There are other basketball films but we do it better because we have Chinese gongfu.'
Jay himself feels the movie is a breakthrough for him, as he got to do comedy and flaunt gongfu skills for the first time.
He composed the song Zhou Da Xia (Swordsman Chou) for the film and he hopes fans will call him that instead of his current nickname Zhou Dong (Chairman Chou).
He thinks Zhou Dong sounds old-fashioned and it's time to stop using it.
'I've been watching gongfu films since young and I once fantasised about becoming a gongfu star. It's just that I learnt the piano instead of the nanchaku (a Chinese weapon).'
So, what's next?
Jay said he will be performing at the CCTV Chinese New Year countdown special in Beijing.

[KOREAN WAVE] Chasing the Korean Dream: 'Koreanovelas' fever is sweeping the Philippines
In the last few years, Korean films, TV dramas and pop music have become immensely popular abroad, a phenomenon known as the Korean Wave. This is the first in a series of essays by a select group of foreign scholars and journalists looking at the spread of Korean pop culture in Southeast Asian countries and beyond. - Ed.
The names Johnny, Jenny and Andrew may not ring a bell for Koreans, but for Filipinos, they started the so-called Korean Wave in the Philippines. They were the "Filipinized" names of the main characters in the drama "Autumn Story," better known as "Endless Love 1" when it was shown in the Philippines. It was the first-ever Korean drama to air in the country.
In 2002, the Taiwanese drama "Meteor Garden" swept through the Philippines and the rest of Asia, paving the way for Chinese dramas to enter local markets. The drama was aired on the ABS-CBN network, one of the Philippines' largest broadcasting companies. More Taiwanese dramas soon followed, heralding the start of the "Chinovelas" (Chinese + novelas, a word derived from the Spanish "novela") fever. Facing the risk of saturating televiewers' interest, the network's rival, GMA-7 looked elsewhere and took a chance on Korean dramas.
As with what ABS-CBN did to "Meteor Garden," GMA-7 translated and dubbed "Autumn Story" into Tagalog to give it a local flavor. It also changed the characters' names to make them easier for Filipinos who may find it difficult to remember, much less pronounce, complicated Korean names.
So the character of Yun Joon-suh (played by Song Seung-hun) became known as Johnny Yun; Choi Eun-suh (Song Hye-gyo) was Jenny Choi; and Han Tae-sukh (Won Bin) was Andrew Han. In late 2003, "Autumn Story" aired locally and is credited with having started the "Koreanovela" phenomenon in the Philippines. The drama has been re-aired twice since then and continued to receive high viewership numbers.
Nina Angeles was one of those who got hooked on the drama. She cited the interesting storyline and the good-looking actors as her reason for watching the drama. "Also, the scenery was very beautiful. Korea looked so beautiful, especially in autumn," she says.
Like Nina, many other Filipino fans began to take interest in Korean movies, as well. She recalls the first time she saw the VCD of "My Sassy Girl" in her brother's bedroom, and thought that it was a porn movie. "My Sassy Girl" was the first Korean film she watched and all the rest followed.
From watching Korean dramas and movies, it was inevitable that fans would take an interest in the country's culture, food and fashion. When, at the height of "Meteor Garden," people were signing up for Mandarin classes, now there was a sudden demand for Korean-language classes and "noraebang" or KTVs became a favorite hangout for fans who wanted to sing along to Korean pop songs.
And so, from Korean dramas and films, it was a natural progression to music, as in Nina's case. A self-confessed "rocker girl" who liked listening to Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Black Crowes and Nirvana, she was nevertheless surprised at her sudden interest in Korean pop culture. "I was attracted to K-pop because it was different from the rock scene in the United States and the Philippines. It sounded a lot like American pop music but in a different language and had an Asian vibe," Nina explains.
She initially liked Lee Min-woo of the boyband Shinhwa, and used to watch him all the time in "Music Tank" on the Arirang channel. During a trip to Hong Kong, she bought CDs and DVDs of Shinhwa. "I feel I could relate more to M (Min-woo) and Shinhwa than N'Sync and Justin Timberlake," Nina says.
The language barrier was not a deterrent for fans like her to continue listening to Korean music. "When I started listening to music and watching dramas, I wanted to learn Korean," she says.
Paola Ebora, 21, was introduced to Korean music through a friend. "Listening to music in a foreign language I don't understand is nothing new to me, so what drew me to listening to K-pop is the same reason that drew me to C-pop (Cantopop): songs that don't distract me from studying because I can't sing along to them," Paola says.
Paola, a journalism student back in the Philippines, studied the language when she went to Korea as a foreign exchange student last year. "Now that I know a little bit of the language enough to sing along and understand parts of the song, I continue to be fascinated with K-pop because they give me what I like in Western music, only that they have the Asian feel."
Korean music and dramas appear intertwined for some fans like Kelly Gomez who likes the soundtracks of the dramas she has watched.
Kelly considers herself a "late bloomer," as far as Korean pop culture is concerned. "I remember the first-ever series that I really finished watching was 'Full House.'"
"Full House" starred Jung Ji-hoon, better known as Rain, and Song Hye-gyo; to Filipino fans, however, they were known as Justine and Jesse, respectively.
"Full House" was one of the highest-rating Korean dramas aired in the Philippines in 2005, peaking at 52 percent and averaging 42.3 percent during its entire run.
The country's two biggest TV networks, GMA-7 and ABS-CBN fight tooth and nail to acquire the rights to the latest Korean dramas. Since the airing of "Autumn Story," "Koreanovelas" have eclipsed local soaps which used to dominate local television.
Several reasons have been cited for the rise of "Koreanovelas": simple plots and few characters, good-looking and fashionable casts, good production values, engaging soundtracks and the showcase of Korean culture.
"I was amazed at how Korea was able to come up with so many dramas. They never seem to run out of stories or ideas because, so far, each drama or movie I have seen has a unique storyline; they are like a factory of drama series. And they always have such lovely casts," Kelly says.
In addition, the values reflected in the stories are not so different from Filipino values that teach about love for family, the importance of respecting elders and fighting for one's true love.
Also, Filipinos have grown tired of the formulaic Filipino soaps that used to run for years. One such drama, "Mara Clara" ran for about five years, so the audience literally saw its lead star grow up before their eyes. On the other hand, Korean dramas are fast-paced and the audience do not have to wait for years to know what would happen to the lead characters, and in the case of romantic dramas, whether they would end up together.
With the introduction of foreign dramas, Filipinos suddenly had more choices and local producers were forced to keep up with the competition. In the long run, however, it became more apparent that buying the rights to Korean or Chinese dramas was cheaper than producing local dramas.
Butch Raquel, an executive of GMA-7, noted in an earlier interview that the cost of buying a foreign drama is equivalent to only a fourth of the cost of a local production, adding that the advertising rates are the same. In short, networks earn more from foreign shows because they do not have to invest huge capital. At the same time, they rake in more revenues from advertising spots when these shows become instant hits.
Aside from a slowdown in local drama productions, which is an effect of the popularity of "Koreanovelas," many dramas were prematurely axed due to low ratings.
In 2006, the Philippines was the fourth-largest buyer of Korean dramas next to Japan, China and Taiwan, according to Leng Raymundo, vice-president for program acquisitions of ABS-CBN.
Aside from "Autumn Story" and "Full House," Korean dramas that have been shown in the Philippines include "Winter Sonata," "Lovers in Paris," "Daejanggeum (Jewel in the Palace)" and "My Girl." The latest to air is "Coffee Prince" which has also been enjoying high ratings.
"Daejanggeum," according to some reports, peaked to as high as 57 percent audience share and, due to its popularity, was rerun, again earning high ratings.
The titles of some Korean dramas were also changed, as in the case of "Gung," which was aired as "Princess Hours" and "What Happened in Bali," which was shown locally as "Memories of Bali." In the case of "Autumn Story," it was initially known as "Endless Love 1" and packaged with "Winter Sonata" as one series. "Autumn Story" was later re-shown under its original title.
Korean dramas being aired on GMA-7 and ABS-CBN also battled in the ratings game, as in the case of "Full House" (GMA-7) which was pitted against "Stained Glass" (ABS-CBN) in the same time slot. Most fans switched channels often and had to quit watching "Stained Glass" during the last episode of "Full House."
Many fans, however, prefer to watch the dramas in their original form, getting these from various sources like pirated copies or downloading from the internet. They say that watching the dubbed version can be annoying as not only the characters' names are translated, but even the music has been changed. The networks use local singers to sing the theme song of the dramas to better market them to the Filipino audience so hardcore fans resort to pirated copies, buying the original online or asking friends in Korea to buy for them.
The popularity of these Korean stars has also turned them into overnight superstars in the Philippines, where most stars these days come from reality-based shows. Stars that have come to visit the country include Lee Dong-gun, better known to his Filipino fans as Martin, the name adapted by his character for the local version of "Lovers and Paris"; Kwon Sang-woo, who even opened a branch of The Face Shop, a Korean beauty store, in Manila; and Lee Dong-wook of "My Girl."
Kelly recalls running alongside a bus carrying Kwon Sang-woo during his Manila visit, ignoring the danger of being run over.
But Kelly, like many fans, was also not about to wait out her life for their idols to visit the country. Tours to Korea became very popular. Last year, Kelly and her friends went on a "Koreanovela" tour that included visiting locations of the dramas "Spring Waltz" and "Princess Hours."
"What really made me decide to visit Korea is the 'Spring Waltz' drama. The sceneries were so lovely that I dreamt of visiting the place. I never knew that it would really come true," she says.
One of the highlights of their trip was seeing famous Korean director Yoon Suk-ho in person when they visited the "Four Seasons House," a joint project of the Seoul government and Yoon's production company. The tourist attraction features the sets of "Autumn Story," "Winter Sonata," "Summer Scent" and "Spring Waltz."
"That trip was really so worth it," says Kelly, whose group did not follow the itinerary provided by their package tour, but instead opted to discover Korea on their own. "Going to places that we've only seen in some of our favorite drama series and movies, to be able to personally see the places where they shot the dramas, see and touch the stuff they used and even talk to some people who were there when they were shooting, was just overwhelming."
In 2003, Nina dreamt of going to Korea to see her favorite stars up close. She realized that dream in 2005 when she got an offer to work in Seoul. But not before turning down another job offer in Taiwan.
But nothing could perhaps be more extreme than Paola, a journalism student, joining an exchange program and ending up specializing in engineering. She explained that the program she got accepted to was for industrial management and, as a result, she did not earn any credits for her studies.
Not that it bothered her. She says that it was the perfect chance for her to go and see Korea, the land of her favorite boyband TVXQ (Dongbangsingi).
Korea, she says, is a "mecca" for any K-pop fan. "Seeing the artists in person performing onstage, hearing their songs and seeing their faces on magazines and television... being in Korea was a dream come true," she says, adding that she loved the experience of being among K-pop fans.
The highlight of her trip was joining a TVXQ fan event, where she was the only foreign fan. Paola got to see her idols up close and even had her picture taken with them. It was, as she says, a once-in-a-lifetime chance that not every fan gets to experience, and the perfect way to cap her Korean dream.
